The hike to Apu Ausangate and Vinicunca is a program of quite a lot of energy and natural enjoyment, be impressed by the magnificent views that the landscapes around Apu Ausangate are located; Glaciers, naturally pigmented hills, steep mountains and colorful lagoons, they will make your trip unique and satisfying.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Pitumarca - Alqatari Community - Ausangate Lake - Anantapata Campsite

Our adventure called Hike to Apu Ausangate and Vinicunca begins in the City of Cusco, we pass by your respective hotel at the predetermined time, it is usually between 4:00 and 5:00 in the morning. We will drive along the asphalt road southward from the City of Cusco, the first section takes approximately 2 hours to reach the District of Pitumarca; The majestic Vilcanota River, agricultural areas of Corn and Potatoes as well as mountain ranges will be part of our trip. Pitumarca is the right place to rest briefly and take some photos of the Colonial Church, as well as the popular town. We continue the trip, this time along the trail road for 1 hour and 30 more minutes until we reach the community of Alqatari, mountains over 3,500 meters, valleys and picturesque communities are what we see throughout this trip. Alqatari located at 4,500 meters above sea level will be the place to have the delicious breakfast prepared by our expert high mountain chef, and also the starting point of our hike.

The ascending hike begins from this point toward the Ausangate Lake, this is one of the most important lakes located around Ausangate “the highest mountain in the department of Cusco” (6,384 meters above sea level), the hike to the lake takes 1 hour and 30 minutes approximately, the perfect moment to take some photos then we continue until we reach the Puca Ccasa pass for 2 hours and 30 more minutes. Puca Ccasa located at more than 4,900 meters is a great place where you can see the Ausangate Mountain and some glacial lakes, we will take advantage of the time to take some photos, to enjoy the environment then we descent to the Anantapata campsite, the hike time to this point will be for around 1 hour and a half.

Anantapata located at more than 4,700 meters above sea level is the place where we will have lunch, relax, have dinner and rest in our camping tents.

Day 2.- Anantapata - Vinicunca - Cusco

The second day of our journey will begin early in the morning, we usually start the day by waking up at 3:00 in the morning, we will have a delicious hot breakfast and then we will begin our hike, the first section will be for a period of 1 hour and 30 minutes approximately until reaching Warmisaya Pass, which is located at more than 4,900 meters above sea level. The spectular sunrise, Vinicunca Mountain and the Apu Ausangate are seen from this point, it is a unique and special place for all visitors, a few photographic shots and we continue with until we reach the Vinicunca Mountain “currently called Rainbow Mountain”.

The Vinicunca Mountain is today one of the 3 most important places in the department of Cusco, visiting it is a pleasure and the perception is very different from the ordinary, additionally we hike toward Waynalaya or Red Valley, an open field of reddish terrain formed by the oxidation of the minerals existing in the area.

Our return will be on the side of Hanchipacha, a community located on the way back to the City of Cusco, this place will be our stopping point to enjoy the delicious lunch and then we will drive to the City of Cusco, the return trip takes at least 3 hours.
