The Historic Sanctuary of Machu picchu is a magical and fascinating place that not only has a rich historical culture, but also a rich diversity of wildlife. In particular, the region is a paradise for bird lovers, there are more than 400 species of birds identified in Machu picchu.
Among the most notable birds of Machu picchu is the giant hummingbird, this species is one of the largest hummingbirds in the world, with a length of up to 24 cm and a weight of up to 20 grams. The giant hummingbird feeds on nectar and pollen from the region’s flowers and is known for its beautiful bright dark green, purple and turquoise plumage.
Another notable species is the Cock of the rock, an iconic bird from South America. This bird is known for its orange and black plumage, as well as its spectacular mating display in which males jump and flap their wings in an attempt to attract females. The cock of the rock can be found on the rocky slopes and in the jungles near Machu picchu, highly sought after by bird specialists “Ornithologists”.
The region is also home to a wide variety of giant birds, such as the Andean Condor and Eagles. The Andean Condor is one of the largest species of birds in the world, it has a wingspan of up to 3 meters, it is easily recognized by its black plumage throughout its body and white around its neck, its flight is too majestic in the skies of the region, considered as a sacred animal by the ancient incas.
Other notable species of Machu picchu include the colorful and beautiful birds, waterfowl, and frugivores. Each of these species is unique and offers something different in terms of appearance, behavior and habitat.
Importantly, many of these bird species are endangered due to habitat degradation and illegal hunting. Therefore, it is essential that visitors to Machu picchu respect the birds and other animals of the region and take measures to preserve their natural habitat.
